Business Results: Provides compact, reliable IoT solution; Gives customers more accurate, robust building data analytics
Every day, Talisen Technologies helps enterprises get meaningful analytics about their building operational pattern, which includes energy, operations and maintenance. Using the Talisen Enterprise Sustainability Platform (ESP), aerospace and defense companies and other large enterprises take advantage of big data and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to gain efficiencies in energy, operations and maintenance. The ESP application converts data from edge devices such as sensors, building automation systems, meters, utilities, IT and operational management systems into visual knowledge. Utilizing the ESP analytics, Talisen customers can monitor, in real time, an entire portfolio of buildings or assets and make informed decisions to drive cost savings and improve operational efficiency.
Talisen relies on gateway devices at the network edge to collect data and send it to the cloud-based ESP application, hosted at the core data center, to mine and analyze big data. These devices must be both compact and reliable. “We’re often not sure how much space we’ll have in any
given building, so we need a very flexible gateway,” says George Brill, CEO of Talisen. “Also, we need something very reliable, because it can be costly for us to go back to a customer building if there are any problems.”
Additionally, the company needed to find the right equipment and platform to host its data access gateway. “As our business has grown, our primary problem has been finding a solution that is commercially supportable yet reasonably priced,” Brill says. Talisen also sought to create a scalable model for solution expansion.
Powering Building energy analytics with the Dell Embedded Box PC 3000
A Dell EMC customer for 25 years, Talisen chose the company again for assistance with a gateway solution. “We’ve had a relationship with Dell EMC for many years, and they’ve been an exclusive supplier of laptops, desktops and servers for our enterprise. We chose Dell EMC again for this solution because they are answering our needs and the market’s needs in the commercially supportable IoT platform space,” says Brill. Dell EMC is a leading infrastructure provider for enterprise IoT, with more than 30 years of IT services, 4,000-plus operational technology customers, and 50-plus partners providing operational technology support.
Talisen decided to deploy the Dell Embedded Box PC 3000, a compact device that is industrially ruggedized and energy-efficient. “Dell EMC is ahead of the curve with embedded server technology, which is one reason we chose this solution,” says Brill.
The Dell Embedded Box PC 3000 offers quad-core processing and the ability to scale to easily meet future application expansions, giving customers the opportunity to realize future cost savings.
The ESP platform includes a data acquisition middleware component, running on the Dell Embedded Box PC 3000, that operates remotely and communicates with the IoTbased edge sensors and building automation system. The middleware collects interval data from these edge devices
and securely transmits it to the Talisen cloud environment for subsequent analysis and reporting.
“The field-level reliability we get with the Dell Embedded Box PC 3000 translates to a high degree of data integrity at the cloud layer. That
strengthens our ability to provide accurate and robust analytics to our customers.” George Brill CEO, Talisen
To bring its ESP gateway to market on a global scale, Talisen chose to work with Dell EMC OEM Solutions, which helps companies launch products quickly and efficiently by building Dell OEM hardware, software and services into their solutions. Dell EMC OEM assisted Talisen in creating
its ESP middleware solution, which Talisen has implemented at several customer buildings.
Deploying a compact, reliable gateway solution
Talisen has met its needs for a flexible, rugged hardware device by integrating the Dell Embedded Box PC 3000 into its ESP platform. “We can better support our enterprise customers who expect performance, because the new Dell Embedded Box PC 3000 brings both compactness and reliability,” says Brill. “Reliability is specifically important in some of the building locations where the devices are placed, such as closets and equipment rooms.”
Providing more accurate and robust analytics
Because Talisen can provide a more reliable solution, the need for field maintenance is reduced. “The field-level reliability we get with the Dell Embedded Box PC 3000 translates to a high degree of data integrity at the cloud layer,” says Brill. “That strengthens our ability to provide
accurate and robust analytics to our customers, so we can ensure they’re getting the real-time building energy management data they need to make the best decisions about their energy consumption.”
“We can focus on our customers and not worry about local technology or deployment issues by taking advantage of the Dell OEM global infrastructure.” George Brill CEO, Talisen
Growing globally with ease
Working with Dell OEM, Talisen is better equipped to expand its business worldwide. For example, Talisen is growing its business in the Middle East by collaborating with Dell OEM. “Enterprise energy IoT solutions are currently in demand all across the world, and as part of this
strong market, Talisen has established an office in Dubai to license its technology in the Middle East,” says Brill. “The local Dell OEM team has been highly proactive in suggesting a Dell-Talisen IoT solution to new potential local and regional customers. We believe this collective effort
will allow us to use the Dell EMC brand and our solution résumé to attract substantial customers to our combined solution.”
Talisen also benefits from the global support it receives from Dell OEM, through features including 24×7 technical support, next-day on-site repair and direct access to regional ProSupport engineers.

Scaling to meet future demand
In the near future, Talisen plans to work with Dell OEM partners to rebrand, load images and ship Dell Edge Gateway devices to global customers. “We can focus on our customers and not worry about local technology or deployment issues by taking advantage of the Dell OEM global infrastructure,” says Brill. This will give Talisen a better ability to scale its ESP platform. “We need a product company with experience, size and capacity, but we don’t want to be encumbered by excessive bureaucracy or delays in creating solutions,” says Brill. “The Dell OEM program
gives us the best of both worlds. We are going to market with Dell EMC and Dell OEM, and that is going to continue to drive new deals and uncover new business opportunities for us.”
